1. Summary

Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes in 1887 in a story entitled A Study in Scarlet. Doyle was so impressed by one of his lecturers at the medical school of Edinburgh University, Dr Joseph Bell, that he made his hero resemble him. After A Study in Scarlet, Doyle wrote The Sign of Four where Holmes and Watson, appeared. It was considered a brilliant work. From then on, Doyle knew he had to share his life with the famous detective and his faithful companion. He had created a man who fascinated thousands of people, eager to know how he was going to solve the most complex riddles the world had ever seen.
